“August” Favourites!

So I realized I’m pretty late on the whole August favourites type post, so I was originally planning on skipping it…but then I thought, reading everyone else’s favourites are the posts I most look forward to, and it’s my blog so…..heck, why not?!

August was my “this is the last of summer so live it up” month, and my favourites revolved around that.

I tried to wear bright colours (loving on the mint and coral) and show off my tan as much as possible. Heading out of town for a wedding, I got these gorgeous bangle bracelets ON SALE from Aldo Accessories, and I have gotten compliments on them every time I wear them. I am just obsessing over coral, mint and gold right now so any outfits I can wear this with you know that I am!

Tarte’s Lights, Cameras, Lashes Mascara
Next, I picked up the Lash Stash pack last month from Sephora (most amazing deal by the way) and have been using Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes…and am obsessed! I have been asked twice if I am wearing false eyelashes. I love how much volume it is giving my lashes, but not clumpy or spidery like Too Faced’s Better Than Sex can sometimes do. Still in love with my Too Faced mascara, but am loving Tarte’s for work.

Revlon Nail Polish — “Teak Rose”
I’ve mentioned before I am a sucker for Revlon nail polish. I just think it has amazing colour payoff, dries fairly quickly and doesn’t chip, all for a great price. I recently picked up Teak Rose and I am IN LOVE. It is a fairly warmed toned dusty rose, that is an absolutely gorgeous colour without being too dramatic. I have so many outfits that go with this polish and I know it looks delicate and pretty and chic!

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette
I actually almost returned this in the first week I got it…if I lived near a Sephora, I would have. I just did not think this was doing anything for me, and after experiencing Laura Mercier’s highlighter, I wasn’t sold — especially with a price tag like this palette has. But I continued to wear it, and it continued to grow on me….and now if I forget to put it on in the morning, I really notice that glow from within look is missing. It just gives the skin an overall beautiful glowy look — thats totally natural looking. My favourite of the palette is by far the middle shade, Incandescent.

Smashbox Eyeliner
With recently picking up Sephora’s Draw the Line eyeliner value set, I figured I should probably use up other liners I have first (I am a liner hoarder, I will admit) so I have only begun to use Smashbox’s black crayon eyeliner…and I love it! Great colour pay off, and I use it on the waterline and it sticks all day. I often veer away from wearing crayon liner at work for fear of panda eyes, but this stuff stays put!

June Favourites!

July is here/happy Canada Day!! Time to celebrate a great country by wearing our colours and drinking our national drink — a beer. But first,  a look back on the month of June and some of the products who really stood out as favs for me!

Revlon Colorstay Concealer

Blends like a dream and perfectly hides those dark circles underneath the eyes. Does exactly what it sets out to do — conceals what I want, and looks 100% natural. Wore this pretty much every single day since I got it!

Origins Mask
My skin has been getting pretty bad lately now that I am off birth control — so this Charcoal Mask has been an absolute life saver. I notice such a difference immediately after use, I know it is really getting the dirt from beneath my skin and helping my stupid blemishes and blackheads disappear!

Coconut Milk Conditioner
Got this near the beginning of the month, and I am officially obsessed. I love trying out new conditioner so it is rare that I repeat — I am for sure repeat buying this. My hair feels so hydrated and healthy — and not to mention smells amazing — after I use this.

MAC Cleanse Off Oil
In the past couple of weeks I’ve re-found love in really taking my time and doing a full face of makeup a lot of the time, so the MAC Cleanse Off Oil just makes my life so easy. I love how it literally makes EVERYTHING come off within two seconds of rubbing it in, and that it turns into lather once you wash it off. Love!

B2B Mousse
I used this when going camping, jump out of the lake and simply scrunch this through your hair and — bam! Voluminous curls and no frizz! And frizz is a huge problem for me. Definitely my go-to mousse from now on!

Bite Beauty #6 Gloss
After getting Bite Beauty’s Deconstructed Rose set, I am venturing between a variety of glosses for different occasions, however #6 cannot go unnoticed, seeming to have found a permanent pocket position in my purse. Smelling sweet and looking great, #6 is a tad darker pink than my natural lip colour, which is perfect  for the natural makeup look I often sport.

Essie Go Gingza
Receiving this for my birthday at the beginning of the month, I’ve pretty much had this colour on either my toes or fingers the whole time since. A light purple, this colour is so flattering and pretty with a tan, and of course Essie polishes always go on smoothly and have great lasting power.

Holy Grail Hump Day — Revlon Colorstay Concealer

For me, a Holy Grail status is a hard one to achieve. I don’t take that title lightly. A Holy Grail product isn’t something I just like, it’s a product I know I can depend on time after time. That I will continue to repurchase because it exceeds expectations and gets the job done every single time.
Image
Therefore, it’s pretty shocking for me that after less than a month, the Revlon Colorstay concealer has already achieved Holy Grail status for me! I got this product completely on a whim, my Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage is going quicker than I want and was hoping to find something for a cheaper price that could do the trick.

(03 Light Medium blended)

Well this does the trick alright. Super blendable, this product comes on creamy and blends in effortlessly. I personally love these tub and stick applicators, it makes it easy to get the product in the exact areas you desire. 03 Light Medium is the perfect shade for me.

Coverage is great, it is buildable, so depending on the coverage you want you can get. However, I feel it comes on pretty thick anyway…a little goes a long way. I use this for the under eye dark bags and it hides them perfectly, with no cakey look whatsoever. It isn’t a highlighter in any way, but a straight up concealer. It does the exact job it has set out to do, and I couldn’t ask for anything more!

This is Where I Draw The Line: Eyeliner Review

Eyeliner is one of my absolute must-haves, if not THE product I need every single day. Eyeliner can waken the entire face, and either enhance your eye look dramatically, or just enough that your face doesn’t look washed out. At all times I am testing out new liners to see what works best for me. Today I am going to do a review on the ones I have been using lately!

Revlon ColourStay Pencil Eyeliner: 5/10

Price: $9.99
Colour/Pigmentation: When first applied I feel the colour payoff is great, however smudges very easily. I won’t have even left the house before I can see it already looking a bit messy.
Staying power: I use this on my waterline and it is almost completely gone after the first couple of hours of wear.
Application: Liner glides on smoothly, and I enjoy that the product can be rolled up so there is no need for a sharpener.

Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Liner: 8/10
Price: $26.00
Colour/Pigmentation: Amazing pigmentation, I personally have it in Stingray which is the ideal deep black, perfect for a night out or defining the eyes during the day.
Staying power: the longevity of this product is pretty good, definitely noticed some fading after coming home from a long day, but still holding on. Which is impressive since my waterline eats everything up!
Application: I think eyeliner swatches are hard to judge…but the above picture further impressed me about this product. You can SEE how smoothly this product glides on.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Double Ended Eye Pencil 8.5/10
Price: $19.00
Colour/Pigmentation: I have this product in Demolition (a dark brown) and Perversion (black) and enjoy this product during the day for the waterline and tightlining. I have to say I love tight lining with Demolition, it really does give the illusion of thicker lashes and does not look harsh.
Staying power: Demolition — awesome. Perversion — alright.
Application: Not quite Stila eyeliner standards, but this product also applies quite smoothly. I would actually say the formula is so soft, it can be a bit smudgy.

Almay 3.5/10
Price: $7.29
Colour Pigmentation: This colour is so dry so it takes quite a few tries to actually show up. The brown does not show up very well.
Staying power. What little does manage to come on during application, is completely gone within the hour.
Application: The packaging is simple and effective, a twist-up bottom makes application easy, and the pencil is very thin which is great for precision, but who cares about that when the product doesn’t even show up?

Sephora Glitter Black 9/10
Price: $15.00
Colour/Pigmentation: The colour payoff is what I love about this the most. I dark black with a tiny bit of shimmer, very unique and great to add that extra touch to your look on a night out!
Staying power: I have only worn this out at night, but it has lasted me easily up to 6 hours.
Application: The brush is very small, making creating that perfect winged line or a bold dramatic stroke. Goes on smooth, I love this!

Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eyeliner 9.8/10
Price: $10.99
Colour/Pigmentation: My all time favourite eyeliner. Colour payoff is amazing whether you do a thin precise line or a bold, dramatic stroke. No feathering, smudges or running.
Staying power: Stays until I take it off. The only reason for the 0.5 is if I happen to cry…things do get messy.  But stay happy, and stay pretty with your eyeliner!
Application: Great small brush for precision, I feel like a little bottle can last me quite a while. Takes a minute to dry but once it does, its so worth it!!

Eyeko 3/10
Price: $19.00
Colour/Pigmentation: This product is very dry so the colour payoff is not so great. The first couple of times I tried it I could get about halfway through an eyelid before it dried out. But you can see even from the swatch above, it is completely dried out!
Staying power: I have never successfully worn this so I couldn’t say! What a waste.
Application: I think the packaging is pretty great, the tip is super thin which could make a great winged liner, but because you feel like you have to keep re-lining forget it.

Stila Intense Black Liquid Liner 9.5/10
Price: $26.00
Colour/Pigmentation: This is an intense black, which is what I love in an eyeliner. The payoff is amazing!
Staying power: I can apply this in the morning when I wake up, and it hasn’t budged by the time I take it off before bed at night. Awesome stuff.
Application: This quick-dry liner is so thin that it can make an amazing thin precise line or a bold stroke.

L’Oreal Paris Carbon Black Intense 9.5/10
Price: $7.97
Colour/Pigmentation: This is my newest liner, and I am extremely impressed. The colour payoff wonderful, no fading or smudging whatsoever. It is a nice dark deep black.
Staying power: Stays all day long, a friend with oily lids even says she has no problem with it disappearing.
Application: The felt tip is so precise, I find it very easy to create the exact look I want. I do feel it works best if you dip back into the pot a couple of times through creating your look, but otherwise am so on board for this product.

Polishing off my Favourites

What better to look at while typing away than pretty finger nails?

Nothing, is the answer. I use to have the problem where I was so lazy I wouldn’t change up the polish until it chipped to the last bit of colour, and now I often can barely wait two days until I change it up! Lively Lilac? Vixen red? Pure Pearl? The options are endless and I absolutely love that nail colour can add the perfect accent to finish off an outfit, or tell the world just what kind of mood you are in.

So with my many, MANY polishes, I am here to point a Plum Seduction painted finger at the polish I think is the ultimate best! The challenger will be put to the test in the following categories:

  • chipping
  • colour payoff
  • variety
  • application/drying time
  • packaging
  • price

So who is up for the task?

ADDRESS: Revlon Nail Enamel Polish
$3.00 – $5.99 14.7mL
Image
Maybe some of you are side-eyeing me right now. “Uhhh, hellOOooo? Essie? OPI? Deborah Lippmann?” Lest we forget the last point on my list $$$. While some may debate Lippmann is $20 for a reason, I could never ever justify spending that much on one itsy bitsy bottle of colour for my nails.

ASSESS: Revlon is the perfect blend of reasonably priced, endless variety and great colour payoff that any girl could find a colour to fall in love with. At only $3.00 – $5.99 per bottle, I truly can say I feel like I am getting the same length in wear as OPI or Essie, both averaging $8 – $10 per bottle. When I can resist biting or changing it up on my own, these polishes have lasted me upwards a week before chipping. It’s formaldehyde, toluene and DBP free formula is not streaky or runny, and goes on smoothly with its perfect sized brush. I can be done with my base, first, second, and top coat and dry within 15 minutes. Not exactly Sally Hansen Insta-Dri  or L’Oreal speedy, but still faster than some of its competitors.

A massive brand, Revlon can be found in basically any drugstore or grocery store, with an endless of possibilities to choose from. While I am more of a bold colour girl, a bestie of mine tends to be drawn more towards nudes and pale colours, yet both of us can time after time find a colour we absolutely adore.

It’s packaging is simple yet sleek, and I appreciate the brush size, making it easy to apply (looking at you Insta-dri, with your over sized brush. Seriously, what is that?)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osyx1Z1ZZlE (I just find this video pretty sexy. ha.)

Some of my favzies include:
Image
Valentine — a bold red.

Image
Fuchsia Fever — a flirty fun pink for summer. Looks so good with a tan!

Image
Fashionista — a deep teal that stands out from the crowd but in a sophisticated way.

Image
Plum Seduction — sooooo pretty.

So there you have it! My go-to polish. I’d also like to give a nod to some close competitors who just didn’t quite reach Revlon standards:
2nd place: L’Oreal
3rd place OPI

Job well done polishes, you sure make my hands and feet proud (and pretty).
