“August” Favourites!

So I realized I’m pretty late on the whole August favourites type post, so I was originally planning on skipping it…but then I thought, reading everyone else’s favourites are the posts I most look forward to, and it’s my blog so…..heck, why not?!

August was my “this is the last of summer so live it up” month, and my favourites revolved around that.

I tried to wear bright colours (loving on the mint and coral) and show off my tan as much as possible. Heading out of town for a wedding, I got these gorgeous bangle bracelets ON SALE from Aldo Accessories, and I have gotten compliments on them every time I wear them. I am just obsessing over coral, mint and gold right now so any outfits I can wear this with you know that I am!

Tarte’s Lights, Cameras, Lashes Mascara
Next, I picked up the Lash Stash pack last month from Sephora (most amazing deal by the way) and have been using Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes…and am obsessed! I have been asked twice if I am wearing false eyelashes. I love how much volume it is giving my lashes, but not clumpy or spidery like Too Faced’s Better Than Sex can sometimes do. Still in love with my Too Faced mascara, but am loving Tarte’s for work.

Revlon Nail Polish — “Teak Rose”
I’ve mentioned before I am a sucker for Revlon nail polish. I just think it has amazing colour payoff, dries fairly quickly and doesn’t chip, all for a great price. I recently picked up Teak Rose and I am IN LOVE. It is a fairly warmed toned dusty rose, that is an absolutely gorgeous colour without being too dramatic. I have so many outfits that go with this polish and I know it looks delicate and pretty and chic!

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette
I actually almost returned this in the first week I got it…if I lived near a Sephora, I would have. I just did not think this was doing anything for me, and after experiencing Laura Mercier’s highlighter, I wasn’t sold — especially with a price tag like this palette has. But I continued to wear it, and it continued to grow on me….and now if I forget to put it on in the morning, I really notice that glow from within look is missing. It just gives the skin an overall beautiful glowy look — thats totally natural looking. My favourite of the palette is by far the middle shade, Incandescent.

Smashbox Eyeliner
With recently picking up Sephora’s Draw the Line eyeliner value set, I figured I should probably use up other liners I have first (I am a liner hoarder, I will admit) so I have only begun to use Smashbox’s black crayon eyeliner…and I love it! Great colour pay off, and I use it on the waterline and it sticks all day. I often veer away from wearing crayon liner at work for fear of panda eyes, but this stuff stays put!

Every Day Office Makeup

When looking at your whole beautiful makeup collection, sometimes it can be really hard to pin point what your everyday makeup is.

You may factor in that every now and then you wear this primer…..

….orrrrr for days you’re a little more glammed up, you’ll wear this lipstick….

…and you know, you do rotate what eyeliner your using sometimes…

But now that I start work at 7:30 a.m. and bring my travel bag of makeup and quickly put it on right at my desk more often than I’d like to admit, I’ve stripped down to what products I absolutely need on the regular that make me feel confident and ready to face the day!

Shocker #1 — no tinted moisturizer. A staple for me on nights out, but I like to let my skin breathe — at least for the summer while I have a natural tan going on, it takes less time in the morning.

I start with (most mornings) Tarte Amazonian Clay bronzer, or if I’m up for contouring, benefit Hoola bronzer. I use my real techniques multi-task brush for this.

I follow that up with my beautiful, Nars Amour.

I then put on the Revlon Colorstay concealer to cover those purple bags. Definitely needed for that 6:30a.m. wakeup.

Next, Anastasia Beverly Hills brow pencil, followed by my Body Shop brow gel.

Then I follow with my Hourglass Ambient Lighting palette for highlight, used with my Body Shop slanted Kabuki brush.

Onto the eyes, I use Urban Decay’s Naked palette, shades W.O.S. and Naked 2 OR Lancome’s Positive Matte for the base. If I have time in the mornings, I opt for the Naked 3 palette, but it usually comes down to Naked Basics right at my desk! haha

I then line the eyes with either my L’Oreal Paris Lineur Intense Carbon Black liquid eyeliner or if I am going for a smaller cat eye, my Stila black liquid liner.

Shocker #2 — Not usually sporting pencil eyeliner at work. As much as I love my Urban Decay Perversion, I just don’t want to have to worry about raccoon eyes that I usually have by the end of the day!

Last of the routine is my fabulous Tarte lights, camera, lashes mascara.

Finish the look off with the lip colour of the day and Voila! my every day office wear makeup!

Miffed Monday — Eyeko London Skinny Liquid Eyeliner

It’s that time of the week again! The time to discuss a product in which I tried with excitement — and left me truly miffed with it’s results. This weeks culprit goes to the one and only Eyeko London Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in black.
Image
Thankfully, I got this liner in part of a value set from Sephora, otherwise I’d be pretty peeved I travelled all the way home with no option of returning this awful excuse of a “precision, accentuating black liquid eyeliner.” I feel duped. After getting the Draw the Line value set, Eyeko was one of the most anticipated items, using it first from the set.

You see, a brand dedicated to liners and mascaras led me to believe I was about to experience something marvellous — and instead it was something quite the opposite. Upon my VERY FIRST try of this liner, I didn’t even finish the second eye before it was completely dried out. That’s it. Trying now, I get the faint leftovers of what was supposedly once there. Thinking I just picked out the unlucky lottery ticket, I checked reviews online — only to find out I am not alone!

“Two liners dried out within the first week of purchase.”

“I was really disappointed. […] As others have noted, the formula is dry and the pen tip is uncomfortable. What’s worse, it is impossible to put this eyeliner on over eyeshadow.”

“While testing the mini Skinny, I noticed (like everyone else) how quickly it dries out… so quickly that it’s almost impossible to line both eyes properly before you have to give up and try again tomorrow.”

“Didnt even get the chance to use this product because when I finally opened the box it was already dried out!”

“Dried out soon after I used it, like 2 days after! Not worth the money at all.”

…And all these comments are from the very first page of the Sephora comments. How can such a seemingly respected eyeliner brand have such a basic formula problem? I see many comments also stating to try to run it under water and it works much better, so I will be trying that….but for $20.00 a pop, you shouldn’t have to be doing stuff like that from the very first try. I’ll stick with my Stila!

What is in my Travel Makeup Bag!

Since I am currently in the process of moving, I figured it was the perfect time to do a post about what is in my travel makeup bag!

Going back and forth between two cities often lately, it is easiest to only bring the essentials. However, with saying goodbye to the place I have lived for the past years comes goodbye dinners, parties, etc. So I still want to look nice!

First off, this is my makeup bag:

My sister is AWESOME and gave me one of my favourite Christmas gifts, a Coach cosmetics bag. In purses/wallets I usually go for neutrals, but I am absolutely obsessed with how vibrant/deep this turquoise is. It easily stands out in my large duffel bags or suitcase, and has big enough pockets to store lots of products for a makeup junkie like me.

(My bag is a bit dirty so I got this picture from online to show the inside!)

Moving on to what is actually in there (makeup only), my essentials are:

  • Primer
  • Tinted Moisturizer
  • Blush
  • Bronzer
  • Highlighter
  • Concealer
  • Eyebrow pencil
  • Eyeshadow Primer
  • Eyeshadow
  • Pencil Liner
  • Liquid Liner
  • Mascara

…Shit, that is a lot of essentials.

For a night out: Too Faced – Better Than Sex Mascara

This list also doesn’t include skincare products, makeup remover, and makeup tools (tweezers, brushes, etc.) — yep that Coach bag is well used! haha

When it comes to your travel makeup bag, it is important to pick the products you’ve come to know and love. The last thing you need is a blush that makes you look like a tomato or a liner that runs and bleeds all over your face when there are no other options around! If you are going to bring along a new product, make sure you have a backup of another brand you know can take it’s place if need be.

Even if it is just for a couple of days and you don’t really think you need something you normally wear, I recommend bringing it anyway if it’s possible. You never know what might happen on this trip, and could thank yourself later on for having your normal makeup routine around.

This is Where I Draw The Line: Eyeliner Review

Eyeliner is one of my absolute must-haves, if not THE product I need every single day. Eyeliner can waken the entire face, and either enhance your eye look dramatically, or just enough that your face doesn’t look washed out. At all times I am testing out new liners to see what works best for me. Today I am going to do a review on the ones I have been using lately!

Revlon ColourStay Pencil Eyeliner: 5/10

Price: $9.99
Colour/Pigmentation: When first applied I feel the colour payoff is great, however smudges very easily. I won’t have even left the house before I can see it already looking a bit messy.
Staying power: I use this on my waterline and it is almost completely gone after the first couple of hours of wear.
Application: Liner glides on smoothly, and I enjoy that the product can be rolled up so there is no need for a sharpener.

Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Liner: 8/10
Price: $26.00
Colour/Pigmentation: Amazing pigmentation, I personally have it in Stingray which is the ideal deep black, perfect for a night out or defining the eyes during the day.
Staying power: the longevity of this product is pretty good, definitely noticed some fading after coming home from a long day, but still holding on. Which is impressive since my waterline eats everything up!
Application: I think eyeliner swatches are hard to judge…but the above picture further impressed me about this product. You can SEE how smoothly this product glides on.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Double Ended Eye Pencil 8.5/10
Price: $19.00
Colour/Pigmentation: I have this product in Demolition (a dark brown) and Perversion (black) and enjoy this product during the day for the waterline and tightlining. I have to say I love tight lining with Demolition, it really does give the illusion of thicker lashes and does not look harsh.
Staying power: Demolition — awesome. Perversion — alright.
Application: Not quite Stila eyeliner standards, but this product also applies quite smoothly. I would actually say the formula is so soft, it can be a bit smudgy.

Almay 3.5/10
Price: $7.29
Colour Pigmentation: This colour is so dry so it takes quite a few tries to actually show up. The brown does not show up very well.
Staying power. What little does manage to come on during application, is completely gone within the hour.
Application: The packaging is simple and effective, a twist-up bottom makes application easy, and the pencil is very thin which is great for precision, but who cares about that when the product doesn’t even show up?

Sephora Glitter Black 9/10
Price: $15.00
Colour/Pigmentation: The colour payoff is what I love about this the most. I dark black with a tiny bit of shimmer, very unique and great to add that extra touch to your look on a night out!
Staying power: I have only worn this out at night, but it has lasted me easily up to 6 hours.
Application: The brush is very small, making creating that perfect winged line or a bold dramatic stroke. Goes on smooth, I love this!

Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eyeliner 9.8/10
Price: $10.99
Colour/Pigmentation: My all time favourite eyeliner. Colour payoff is amazing whether you do a thin precise line or a bold, dramatic stroke. No feathering, smudges or running.
Staying power: Stays until I take it off. The only reason for the 0.5 is if I happen to cry…things do get messy.  But stay happy, and stay pretty with your eyeliner!
Application: Great small brush for precision, I feel like a little bottle can last me quite a while. Takes a minute to dry but once it does, its so worth it!!

Eyeko 3/10
Price: $19.00
Colour/Pigmentation: This product is very dry so the colour payoff is not so great. The first couple of times I tried it I could get about halfway through an eyelid before it dried out. But you can see even from the swatch above, it is completely dried out!
Staying power: I have never successfully worn this so I couldn’t say! What a waste.
Application: I think the packaging is pretty great, the tip is super thin which could make a great winged liner, but because you feel like you have to keep re-lining forget it.

Stila Intense Black Liquid Liner 9.5/10
Price: $26.00
Colour/Pigmentation: This is an intense black, which is what I love in an eyeliner. The payoff is amazing!
Staying power: I can apply this in the morning when I wake up, and it hasn’t budged by the time I take it off before bed at night. Awesome stuff.
Application: This quick-dry liner is so thin that it can make an amazing thin precise line or a bold stroke.

L’Oreal Paris Carbon Black Intense 9.5/10
Price: $7.97
Colour/Pigmentation: This is my newest liner, and I am extremely impressed. The colour payoff wonderful, no fading or smudging whatsoever. It is a nice dark deep black.
Staying power: Stays all day long, a friend with oily lids even says she has no problem with it disappearing.
Application: The felt tip is so precise, I find it very easy to create the exact look I want. I do feel it works best if you dip back into the pot a couple of times through creating your look, but otherwise am so on board for this product.
